Job Purpose:
The Innovation Development Manager is responsible for identifying, developing, and prototyping next-generation footwear concepts, technologies, materials and construction methods in close collaboration with the Innovation team and SVP Innovation. Stationed directly at the China Footwear Services (CFS) office in Guangzhou, this role bridges global design vision with local manufacturing innovation—scouting cutting-edge materials/technologies and leading pre-development through to fully realized concept prototypes for global markets.
Key Responsbilities:
Innovation Prototype Delivery & Timeline Management
• Timeline Execution: Deliver high-quality innovation prototypes according to agreed-upon project timelines, ensuring critical sample milestones are met for global product line reviews.
• Hands-on Concept Realization: Oversee the end-to-end fabrication, assembly, and refinement of early-stage concept prototypes, converting abstract design ideas into physical, functional footwear samples.
• Consumer Centric Thinking: Capable of identifying innovative solutions that help solve consumer needs and not building concepts ‘just because it can be done’
In-Factory Trials & Process Testing
• Factory Execution: Lead and supervise on-site factory trials with factory-based teams to test and evaluate new materials, novel tooling constructions, and innovative methods of make.
• Validation & Refinement: Analyze trial performance, identify technical roadblocks, and optimize manufacturing processes early in the pre-development stage to ensure structural stability, performance, and future scalability.
Technology Scouting & Local Market Intelligence
• Opportunity Identification: Continuously scout the local market, material suppliers, research labs, and vendor ecosystems to identify emerging technologies, materials, and manufacturing capabilities.
• Supplier Partnerships: Establish and nurture strategic partnerships with local innovation vendors, tooling facilities, and material suppliers to gain early access to cutting-edge footwear solutions.
Close Collaboration with Local Product Development (PD)
• Local PD Alignment: Work in close collaboration with the local CFS Product Development (PD) team in Guangzhou to ensure smooth knowledge transfer, seamless transition of proven concept prototypes into main development pipelines, and alignment on engineering standards.
• Cross-Functional Bridge: Act as the technical liaison between local factory partners, the local PD team, and global design/creation teams to ensure unified project direction.
• Innovation Representative in China: Help represent Innovation function at local meetings and milestones with the support of the greater team.
Qualifications & Skills:
• At least 3 years of experience in footwear product development, technical innovation, or prototyping, ideally within a regional brand development hub or office.
• Fluent in both written and spoken English and Mandarin, to be the bridge between local factory teams and the larger organization.
• Creative collaborator with demonstrated ability to think laterally and push the norm
• Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to work effectively across suppliers, factories, logistics partners, country teams, and senior management.
